Amid the posters of martial arts notables hanging on the walls of his school, Sifu Dusty Rhodes often reflects on one of a child donning an eye patch and going through his martial arts paces. The child, said Rhodes, lost an eye to cancer. Not lost on the Sifu, however, is the inspiration that the photo continues to bring.

On May 12, Rhodes and his students participated in their annual charity fundraiser for the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, using their martial arts skills to fight for the wellbeing of the less fortunate.

According to Rhodes, the event, now in its third year, is running smoother than ever, thanks in large part to the contributions of his students and the community at large.

“It has definitely gotten easier,” said Rhodes, 44. “Now that we have more experience, I’ve been able to go out and ask other stores to be involved. Dominos supplied some pizzas; we got sandwiches from the Battaglia Brothers Deli. I was able to use the website and get the word out online.”

That expansion goes from Port Chester train station to Playland but does not include the Milton Point area of Rye, leaving a void of service for certain locals who felt blindsided by the county’s decision to end the old route.

Last week, Federal District Judge Louis Pollak died at 89. After serving as dean of two law schools, Yale and Penn, he might have expected to be named to the U.S. Supreme Court, or at least to one of the U.S. Courts of Appeal. But at age 55, he accepted a call to the federal trial bench, where judges deal with real people and rule on issues both factual and legal.

Defining the real witch hunt PDF Print E-mail

In the old days, the legend goes, if they thought you were a witch they tied up your hands and feet – or weighed you down with stones – then tossed you into a well. It was a test, you see – if you floated, you were a witch. If you didn’t float, you weren’t a witch, but you were drowning. Oh well.

The Central Avenue Bridge
The city held a meeting with the state Department of Transportation earlier this month to resolve the outstanding regulatory and compliance issues that have caused the ongoing delays in getting final state approval. The state has agreed to work toward a deadline of July 1 to have all matters resolved so the city can finally put the project out for contractor bidding. The council also voted in favor of continuing the city’s efforts to have the bridge rebuilt as it is a central transportation route that connects city neighborhoods and destination points.
